NAATI ACCREDITION
In
Australia, translators and interpreters can gain accreditation by
passing a NAATI test. NAATI is the National Accreditation Authority for
Translators and Interpreters. In order to pass this test, translators
need to accurately translate two passages from one language (source
language) into another (target language), as well as answering
questions about the ethics of translation. Pass rates are low, ensuring
the high standards associated with accreditation are maintained. NAATI
accreditation for translation is issued in one direction (e.g. English
into Dutch OR Dutch into English). Translators wishing to translate in
both directions have to pass two separate tests.
NAATI
accreditation is now linked to ongoing professional development. In
order to keep accreditation, translators and interpreters are required
to expand their professional knowledge and skills continuously. Only
when this requirement has been met, accreditation will be re-issued
after each period of 3 years.
